Change Ceiling Fan Direction

Change your ceiling fan's direction to keep your home warm in the winter.

Many people only think of using their ceiling fan to cool down in the summer, but a simple change of direction can help circulate warm air in the winter. Because the hot air is equally distributed in the home, your thermostat will not turn on as often. Over an entire season, the energy savings can be significant. Set the fan on a low speed when using it in the winter so the increased air flow does not cool the room down.

Instructions

1. Turn the ceiling fan off. Wait for it to stop rotating before touching the fan.

2. Check your owner's manual for the location of the fan's direction switch. For most ceiling fans, this will be somewhere on the body of the fan, near the chain that turns it on. Flip the switch to the opposite position.

3. Turn the fan back on and watch the rotation of the blades to make sure you have selected the correct direction.
