Paint A Ceiling Design

The ceiling of a room, which also is thought of as the fifth wall, often is left white while the rest of the walls are painted a certain color. However, even the ceiling can be designed and painted to achieve a unique look. Ceilings do not have to be left one solid color, either. Painting various designs on the ceiling is a terrific idea for creating a unique perspective in any room in your home.

Instructions

1. Draw a rough sketch of your design on a piece of paper. The design can be whatever you want it to be. After you have your initial sketch, go to any local printing shop and have your sketch transferred onto a transparency paper. You will use this transparency as a guide to painting the design onto your ceiling.

2. Remove any furniture that may be in the way before you begin painting. Cover anything else in the room that you don't wish to be painted with a drop cloth.

3. Clean off your ceiling before you paint anything. Patch up any holes that may be evident, and wash off loose dust or previous paint. Use your paint roller and an extension pole to apply an even coat of primer on your ceiling. This will prepare it for the actual paint. Wait until the primer dries off completely before proceeding.

4. Apply one to two coats of base paint and wait for that to dry completely as well. While you wait for the paint to dry, prepare your scaffolding. You can build your own or you can rent one. If you are building your own, make sure you build it up to the necessary height. Also make sure it is stable and sturdy enough to hold you; you may need to use a safety harness.

5. Take your projector and display the transparency so that it fits in the area you've chosen to paint. Adjust the projector as necessary and center or focus the image as you see fit. Take your acrylic paints and pour them onto your artist's palette. Take your brushes and the palette up on the scaffold and adjust yourself so that you are comfortable to paint.

6. Make an outline of your design with a small brush, then proceed to fill in the areas with larger and wider brushes. Work slowly and patiently. Always make sure you are comfortable enough on the scaffold, and take breaks as necessary.
