Cover A Ceiling Fan

Update a bland ceiling fan with blade covers.

Ceiling fan blade covers change the appearance of plain wooden blades to an updated style. Several cover styles are available, including palm leaves, patterns, and crayons for a child's room. The installation process is straightforward -- the covers are positioned so they are visible from the room below. Working on a ladder to reach the blades may be the most challenging part of the project.

Instructions

1. Turn the ceiling fan off. Let the rotation of the blades stop entirely.

2. Place a step stool or ladder underneath the ceiling fan so you can reach the blades.

3. Climb the ladder or step stool while holding one fan blade cover. Hold the blade cover with the insertion sleeve facing up and the open end of the sleeve toward the fan motor. If you have blade covers with adhesive backing, skip to Step 5.

4. Insert the fan blade tip into the open end of a sleeve-style blade cover. Slide the sleeve down the fan blade to the end closest to the fan motor. Tighten the elastic strips on the blade cover from the top side of the fan blade by pulling on one end. Repeat the process for each fan blade cover.

5. Pull the protective backing off a blade cover with adhesive strips. Stick the blade cover to the underside of the fan blade. Repeat the process for each fan blade cover.

6. Remove the ladder or step stool. Turn the fan on high. Observe the covers for movement as the fan blades turn. Turn off the fan and let the blades stop. Tighten any covers that moved during fan operation, and check again for movement.
