Install Hanging Ceiling Lights

Hanging ceiling lights change the feel of a room.

Hanging ceiling lights create a more intimate kind of atmosphere in a room, because the light isn't looming up on the ceiling but is hovering down closer to face level. Most hanging light kits come with cloth cords that enclose the wiring line from the ceiling canopy to the fixture, and are much longer then they need to be, so you can adjust them. You can install the hanging light in place of any existing ceiling light fixture, then control it from the same switch.

Instructions

1. Cut power to the room at the house circuit box. Set your stepladder under the existing fixture.

2. Climb the ladder and remove the existing fixture, unscrewing the screws that are visible and pulling it down. Disconnect the wires where they are links between the fixture and the exposed ceiling electrical box. Unscrew and take down the mounting plate from the old fixture. (The mounting plate generally is a strip or disk of metal that attaches to the electrical box.) Leave the wires from the electrical box hanging down.

3. Locate the mounting plate in your new fixture kit. Connect it to the electrical box with the provided screws. Pull the wire ends down around or through the plate, depending on its design. Twist the bare copper ground wire from the ceiling box around the green ground screw on the mounting plate.

4. Carry the new fixture up the ladder, holding the fixture itself in one hand and the ceiling canopy in the other, letting the connecting cord hang between them. Set the fixture on top of the ladder, and raise the ceiling canopy part of it up the ceiling.

5. Connect the black wire coming out of the canopy to the black wire hanging down from the ceiling, twisting a wire cap over to two wires to link them. Do the same with the white wires. Tuck the connections up inside the electrical box.

6. Adjust the length of the cord coming down from the canopy to make it as long as you want it. Designs vary, but generally there will be a nut on the canopy, where the cord enters, and you loosen the nut and pull the spare length cord into the canopy, letting it bunch up inside.

7. Secure the canopy to the mounting plate using the provided screws. Turn on the power.
