Make A Bamboo Ceiling Treatment

There are many ways to make a ceiling treatment from bamboo. The simplest is to nail bamboo trim in place and paint the ceiling a color similar to the bamboo. Using this method, you can add bamboo cross members and faux beams. However, if you want a full bamboo ceiling treatment, you will need to measure and cut the bamboo carefully as you install. If your room is longer than your longest length of bamboo, you will need to join two pieces to complete the span. To keep the ceiling in balance, you will likely want to use varying lengths to prevent a noticeable line in the ceiling at the longest length of bamboo.

Instructions

1. Measure the dimensions of your ceiling. All of your bamboo strips will need to be installed in the same direction and need to be cut to fit your ceiling.

2. Calculate the number of pieces of bamboo needed to span the ceiling. This will vary depending on the thickness of the bamboo. For example, if your room is 10 feet wide and the bamboo is 1 inch in diameter, you will need 120 pieces of bamboo to cover the ceiling.

3. Cut your bamboo to fit the dimension of the ceiling on which you will run the bamboo. You may need to use two pieces of bamboo to span long distances. For example, if you will run the bamboo along a 12-foot ceiling and the bamboo is in 8-foot lengths, you will need to use two pieces to span the extra 4 feet.

4. Consider splitting the bamboo. By splitting the bamboo in half, your treatment will require only half the bamboo. Split the bamboo on a tablesaw.

5. Nail the first piece of bamboo in place using thin nails that are long enough to hold securely in the existing ceiling. The length of the nail will depend on both the width of the bamboo you are using. Split bamboo can accommodate shorter nails.

6. Butt the extension piece up against the first piece of bamboo, if your room is longer than your bamboo, and nail it in place.

7. Place the next course of bamboo as close to the first as possible. Because of irregularities in bamboo, there will likely be gaps between the two pieces of bamboo. Nail this piece in place and add any necessary extensions.

8. Continue this process until your ceiling treatment is in place. In many cases, there may be a gap between the last bamboo course and the wall. For example, if you are using 1-inch bamboo, because of irregularities in the bamboo, you may end up with a half-inch gap. In this case, cut your last course down to half an inch and place the cut against the wall.
