Install A Flushmount Exterior Light

A flush-mount light is one that sits fully against the wall or ceiling, as opposed to hanging down from a rod or chain. Flush mounting is the most common kind of system in exterior lighting, as a dangling light could be dangerous on windy days. Installing an exterior light is the same process as installing an interior light, except it's a good idea to wrap the connections in electrician's tape to provide some extra protection against the elements. Use only light fixtures that specify outdoor use, as they are made with weatherproof materials.

Instructions

1. Cut power to the existing external light fixture at the house fuse box or circuit breaker.

2. Remove the old fixture by taking out the screws holding it to the electrical box. Disconnect the wires behind the fixture, untwisting the wire nuts holding them together. Pull the fixture away, revealing a white wire, a black wire and a bare grounding wire.

3. Lift the mounting bracket from your new light up to the electrical box. Secure it there with the screws provided with the assembly.

4. Wrap the bare ground wire from the box around the green ground screw on the bracket. Tighten the screw.

5. Connect the black wire from the box to the black wire from the fixture by holding the two bare wire ends next to each other and twisting the wire nut over both. Repeat the process to connect the white wires from the box and the fixture.

6. Wrap electrical tape around each of the two connections, sealing them entirely.

7. Set the fixture against the bracket, tucking the wiring into the electrical box as you do. The whole base of the fixture should sit flush against the surface, covering the whole box and the area around it. Secure the light to the fixture with the screws with which it came.

8. Turn on the electricity at the fuse box or circuit breaker.
