Change Ceiling Fixtures

Ceiling light fixtures are simple to install if the proper wiring is in place.

Switching out an old ceiling fixture (usually a light) with a new one is surprisingly easy, as long as the current fixture is properly wired and installed. Once the power's off, it's just a matter of disconnecting the old fixture from the electrical circuit, and putting the new one in its place, wired and mounted in the same fashion. The existing wall switch will control the new fixture.

Instructions

1. Turn off power to the circuit at the house fuse box. Set your ladder under the existing fixture.

2. Remove the mounting screws around the perimeter of the existing fixture, using a screwdriver. Pull it down off the ceiling, exposing the wires behind it. Disconnect the fixture wires from the ceiling wires, so you can remove the fixture completely. You should be left with an open ceiling electrical box with three wires hanging out of it (black, white and bare copper).

3. Carry the new fixture up the ladder and hold it near the electrical box. Hold the black wire from the new fixture next to the black wire from the electrical box, so the bare ends of both wires are side by side. Twist a wire nut over the two of them at once, turning the nut clockwise until it stops. Wrap the connection in electrical tape.

4. Repeat the process to connect the white wire from the fixture to the white wire from the electrical box.

5. Twist the bare copper wire from the electrical box around the green screw inside the new fixture. This is the grounding connection. Tighten the green screw.

6. Press the new fixture against the ceiling box, tucking the wires into the electrical box. Line up the mounting holes in the fixture with the mounting holes in the electrical box, and screw in the mounting screws that came with the fixture. Turn on the power and test the fixture at the wall switch.
