Tray Ceiling Decorating Ideas

This tray ceiling features a fan in the center.

Tray ceilings have an indentation in them, usually in the shape of a rectangle or square (resembling an upside-down tray). This architectural feature creates an upscale look in a home. Tray ceilings are popular in formal dining and living rooms, as well as in large master bedrooms. Usually, they have a light fixture or fan hanging from the center. Tray ceilings can be left alone, but decorating them adds a punch of style to any room.

Paint and Wallpaper

Use paint to highlight the unusual shape of your tray ceiling. Inexpensive and easy to apply, paint is the quickest way to decorate. Try painting the top of your tray ceiling a light shade and the sides a slightly darker shade. If your tray ceiling has graduated levels on the sides, experiment with gradations of paint color to bring them out. In addition, consider adding a wall covering to the ceiling. A textured wallpaper can look rich on a tray ceiling.

Molding and Lights

Crown molding gives a tray ceiling an even more dramatic look. First paint the ceiling, then choose sparkling white or a rich, dark brown for the crown molding. (See Resources for tips on installation.) Place a matching medallion around your hanging light fixture, if you have one. In fact, consider switching out a standard light fixture for something unusual that will draw attention to your tray ceiling. This can be anything from a modern chandelier to an antique birdcage modified to hold lights.

Ceiling Tiles

Another popular look for tray ceilings is to install ceiling tiles. Most home improvement centers sell panels of ceiling tiles in almost every color, from silver to copper to plain white. You can purchase them already engraved with an elaborate design or choose a custom design. Lightweight tiles can sometimes be installed with simple construction adhesive and fitted together so that the grooves don't show.
