Use Kilz To Cover Mold Stains

Prime mold stains prior to painting.

Painting over an area that contains mold stains can prove fruitless when you notice the stains bleeding through the new paint job several weeks later. For tough mold stains, several coats of primer are necessary to block the stain before painting. Kilz is a water-based primer that covers mold stains on interior or exterior walls and ceilings. Chemicals in Kilz primers seal the surface providing a mildew-resistant coating that prevents mold from growing.

Instructions

1. Clean the area containing the mold stains with a mold and mildew cleaner. Follow the application instructions on the cleaner's label. Rinse the area with a clean, wet rag to remove all residues after cleaning and allow the area to air dry.

2. Stir the Kilz Primer thoroughly with a wooden paint stick before applying. Slip on a pair of goggles to protect your eyes and open all of the windows in the area where you will be applying the Kilz.

3. Fill the reservoir of a paint tray with Kilz primer after mixing. Saturate a paint roller with Kilz primer by rolling the paint roller through the primer in the paint tray several times.

4. Roll a layer of Kilz primer onto the walls or ceiling containing the mold stains using the paint roller. Apply the layer of primer as evenly as possible, covering the entire surface of the wall or ceiling.

5. Allow the primed area to dry for one hour. Apply a second coat after the one hour waiting period. The primed surface is ready for painting one hour after the final coat of Kilz primer.
