Figure Out What Size Ceiling Fan You Should Get

A ceiling fan can supplement your home's cooling system.

There are many different sizes available for ceiling fans that can be installed in your home. Before you choose a ceiling fan, it's important to figure out what size you should get for the room where you want to put it. Sizing for ceiling fans is important because one that is too small will not provide adequate cooling power for your home. A ceiling fan that is too large, however, can look cumbersome and awkward in your home.

Instructions

1. Get the square footage of the room or space where you plan to place the ceiling fan. Measure the height and width of the room or space with measuring tape.

2. Multiply the measurements you got for the length and the width of your room or space. The answer gives you the square footage.

3. Base the size ceiling fan you choose on the square footage of the room or space. There are some general guidelines to follow. A space that is 144 square feet or less needs only a 42-inch ceiling fan. A room between 144 and 225 square feet needs a 44-inch ceiling fan, and a room between 225 and 400 square feet needs a 52-inch fan.

4. Measure the height of your room or space using your measuring tape.

5. Select the drop rod length for your ceiling fan based on the measurement you got for the height of the room. As with the ceiling fan size, there are some general guidelines to follow. A 12-inch drop rod should be used for ceiling of 8 or 9 feet in height, which is a standard height. Add 6 inches to the length of the drop rod for a 10-foot ceiling, equaling 18 inches, and 6 more for an 11-foot ceiling, equaling 24 inches. A 36-inch drop rod is needed for a 12-foot ceiling, and a 48-inch one for a 13-foot ceiling.
