Use Dimming Cfls In Ceiling Fans

Install CFL bulbs in your ceiling fan.

A cost-effective method of addressing rising energy prices is to install compact fluorescent bulbs, or CFLs, in place of your regular incandescent bulbs. Since ceiling fans may have four or more sockets in which to screw bulbs, the wattage consumption can add up quickly when using regular bulbs. CFL bulbs have come a long way since their creation and now come in many different styles. Dimmable CFLs are on the market and are especially beneficial if your ceiling fan is hooked up to a dimmer switch. Using dimmable CFL bulbs in a ceiling fan will help lessen your environmental footprint and lower your energy bill.

Instructions

1. Turn the ceiling fan and light off.

2. Set up a ladder, climb it and unscrew the existing bulbs from your ceiling fan by turning each one counter-clockwise.

3. Look at the wattage displayed on each bulb. You need to find dimmable ceiling fan CFLs that give the same wattage as your existing bulbs. Take note that the actual wattage of each CFL bulb will be far less than your incandescent bulb. You need to look for the equivalent wattage when picking up the bulbs -- 13 watt CFL bulbs are equivalent to 60 watt incandescent bulbs.

4. Screw each new CFL bulb into the fan. Turn it clockwise until snug. Do not over-tighten or it may break.

5. Turn the light switch on to test your new light bulbs. Adjust the dimmer to verify that they dim.
