Move the heat around in a room with your ceiling fan.
Ceiling fans are useful in helping to control energy costs in the summer by circulating the air in your home. Did you know that you can use your ceiling fan to move hot air in the winter? Most ceiling fans have a directional switch that controls the direction that the fan blades turn. When you are in the cold-weather season, you can have your ceiling fan move the warm air that is near the ceiling into the lower part of the room to distribute the heat evenly.
Instructions
1. Determine which way the fan blades currently rotate with the fan running. The blades normally run in a counter-clockwise direction. You will want the blades to move in a clockwise direction to move the heat. If your blades are already moving in a clockwise direction, you do not need to do anything until you want to move cool air next season.
2. Turn off your ceiling with the pull switch or the remote control. It is also a good idea to turn the wall switch off to the fan as you are changing the fan blade direction.
3. Place a step stool under the ceiling fan so that you can reach the body of the fan. Locate the small switch that controls the direction of the fan blades. The switch is usually a small black or white switch.
4. Position the switch opposite its current position until you hear the switch click into position. Turn on the wall switch for the fan and turn on the fan. The blades will be moving in a clockwise direction. Set the speed on the ceiling fan to low. This will move the air without cooling the room.
