Cleaning mold from a bathroom ceiling is complicated by the nature of mold. Rubbing mold transfers it to other proximate surfaces, where it will grow. A dime-sized section of mold contains millions of mold spores. It is important not to disturb the spores or they will become airborne and attach where they land, multiplying the mold issue. Mold should be cleaned with a thorough process of removal, called remediation.
Instructions
1. Cover the bathroom walls and fixtures with plastic. Close the bathroom door. Vent the bathroom to the outside if possible. Wear a breathing respirator.
2. Wipe the mold-contaminated ceiling with commercial bleach eradication products or bleach. This will kill some surface mold, but not totally eradicate the mold embedded in the ceiling plaster or drywall.
3. Remove the portion of mold-infesting bathroom ceiling drywall or plaster using a drywall saw, pry bar, drywall knife and hammer. Seal the ceiling debris in plastic bags.
4. Check the ceiling joists for mold. If mold is present, wipe with an approved mold inhibitor and let dry.
5. Discard the plastic sheeting and sealed, bagged mold-infested ceiling debris. Replace ceiling plaster and drywall.
