Install Ceiling Decorations

Ceiling moldings are designed to attach flat to the ceiling surface as if they were made of plaster.

Ceiling decorations for private homes are ornamental moldings that replicate expensive plaster moldings that were handmade in older homes. These moldings can be ornate. One common type of ceiling decoration is the medallion mounted with ceiling fixtures. A medallion highlights expensive light fixtures, such as chandeliers, and adds architectural detail to the house and the room. Often ceiling decorations are paired with conventional moldings and painted in the same color and treatment as other moldings in the home.

Instructions

1. Plan your ceiling decoration installation. Trims are often expensive even if they are not made of wood or plaster. Measure the length and width of the room. Transfer the measurements to 1/4-inch graph paper.

2. Place tracing paper over the graph paper and use the graph grid to help you position the ceiling decorations you want to install. Decorations to consider include: ceiling medallions, moldings and lines. Medallions are centered on a light fixture, moldings may be curved to fit corners, and lines are a row of some type used to frame the edges of the ceiling. These are not the same as crown moldings.

3. Measure and sketch the design you want to install. Note the measurements on any molding you need to cut so you can estimate the amount to purchase.

4. Determine whether your medallion has a direction. Some designs should be positioned to align with the room; others are the same in all directions. Larger designs often must be aligned. Make a small mark on the edge of the medallion and a matching mark on the ceiling once you have it lined up.

5. Apply construction adhesive to the back of the medallion and press the medallion to the ceiling at the mark. Tear off strips of painter's tape 12 inches long and tape from the medallion over the edge and onto the ceiling in six locations around the medallion. This will help hold the medallion.

6. Nail finish nails through the medallion into the ceiling. Nail at recesses in the design to help hide the nail heads. Nail into studs or joists when possible. Allow the adhesive to dry. Recess nail heads with a nail set and hammer. Fill nail holes with spackle using your finger tip. Caulk around the perimeter of the medallion to hide the seam. Allow the caulk to dry before applying finishes.
