Once primed, you can paint knockdown texture with any color or sheen.
You can apply knockdown texture to both walls and ceilings by spraying texture on the walls in a random spatter, then "knocking it down" with a drywall knife to a low-profile, lightly-textured finish. Apply it to new drywall or over a previously painted smooth surface to add a bit of interest to the walls or to disguise drywall damage. To paint knockdown walls or ceilings, proceed as you would when painting any other texture. The most important step is priming the surface. Once the primer is dry, apply two coats of paint in the color and gloss level you prefer.
Instructions
1. Allow the knockdown to dry for at least 24 hours after application. Open windows and use a fan to facilitate drying.
2. Prepare the area for painting. Move furniture out of the room or away from the walls, and cover it with plastic sheeting. Protect the floor with drop cloths.
3. Apply painter's tape to trim, baseboards and adjacent surfaces. Press the tape down firmly with your fingers to prevent primer and paint from seeping underneath.
4. Prime the surface with latex or PVA drywall primer using a half-inch roller cover and 3-inch brush. Textured, absorbent surfaces will soak up primer, so figure about 200 square feet of coverage per gallon of material. Allow the primer to dry for at least four hours.
5. Paint the primed knockdown with two coats of good-quality latex paint. Cut in around the edges with a brush first, then roll the rest of the surface. When painting both walls and ceilings, paint the ceiling first, then the walls. Remove masking tape when the paint is dry.
