Ceramic Grout Cleaning Tips

Simple cleaning measures will leave your ceramic grout sparkling clean.

Ceramic tile is often installed with grout placed between the tiles. The grout serves as a form of protection for the tiles. It not only keeps moisture from seeping behind the tiles, it also helps hold the tiles together. Ceramic tile grout gets dirty over time and must be cleaned. Keep in mind some simple tips when cleaning ceramic grout to ensure the grout gets clean without compromising the integrity of the ceramic.

Sweep First

Prior to cleaning the grout, use a broom or vacuum cleaner to sweep up loose dirt, dust and debris from the grout lines and the entire ceramic surface. If the ceramic is on a backsplash, wall or countertop, use a dry rag or handheld brush to sweep away any loose debris. This will make wet cleaning easier and require less work. You will clearly see any stains, lodged dirt or discoloration on the grout once you remove all surface debris.

Remove Mold and Mildew From Grout With Peroxide or Vinegar

Hydrogen peroxide and white vinegar are two common household products that many people don't associate with cleaning. Both products will remove mold and mildew from grout.

If your grout is colored, use white vinegar to remove mold and mildew. Dampen a rag with white vinegar and scrub the moldy grout. Let it sit for a few minutes, then wash the grout with a rag and soapy water. Rinse clean with a rag and plain water.

Hydrogen peroxide can be used to remove mold and mildew from white or light-colored grout. It has a mild bleaching agent so it may discolor colored grout. Spray the peroxide onto the grout. Let it sit for five minutes, then wipe the grout clean with a wet rag. Not only will the peroxide remove the mold and mildew, but it will brighten up your grout.

Make a Homemade Grout Cleaner For General Cleaning

Although there are a variety of products on the market for cleaning ceramic grout, many of them contain harsh chemicals. Opt for a natural approach with your own homemade grout cleaner. Combine equal parts table salt, baking soda and white vinegar into a bowl. Mix with a spoon until a paste forms. Use a sponge to scrub the mixture into the grout. Let it sit for a couple of minutes, then wipe the grout clean with a damp rag.

Use a Toothbrush

If you need a little extra cleaning power, use an old toothbrush to scrub the grout. Whether you are removing mold and mildew or just doing some general cleaning, a toothbrush will effectively remove lodged dirt and grime from the grout.

Dry the Grout and Tile Thoroughly

After cleaning, it is important to dry the grout and surrounding tile with a dry rag to remove any excess moisture. If moisture remains on the grout, it can cause mold or mildew and may also seep behind the ceramic. Moisture or residue from cleaning that gets onto the ceramic can cause unsightly streaks, so it is necessary to wipe the tiles down thoroughly.
