93 dakota transmission problems

93 Dakota Transmission problems

Hello all, Truck is: 1993 Dodge Dakota 318 magnum engine 4 wheel drive Auto Trans. Problem: Approx 2,000 miles after the trans was rebuilt, driving down the road it just quit moving. After it sat for an hour or so, it would move, but seemed to be stuck in first gear. It sat for about a year or so and then we tried it again. It has first and reverse like it should, and rock solid, no slipping at all. If I drive down the road, and really hammer the gas pedal, and then let off of it, it will shift into second gear. The guy who rebuilt the trans said it sounds like the tranny filter needs changing. I do have a filter for it but haven't changed it yet. I wanted to ask opinions about this. I understand there are adjustments that can be made while the pan is off. Any opinions on this tranny? Do symptoms like this indicate a plugged filter? When I change it, should I attempt to adjust the trans according to the manual I have? Thanks in advance for any info provided. A filter change won't hurt. probably not your problem. when you drop the pan, dump the fluid in the pan, inspect the bottom of the pan, for a deposit of metal. more than a 1/2 teaspoon, in a single spot-indicates an internal problem. as for your problem, I see you are in Michigan! inspect the linkage, that goes from the throttle body to the to of the trans, on the driver side. that is the throttle pressure cable/linkage. make sure it is free/not binding-rusted. It has allot to do with shift timing. also, try! - drive the veh away from a stop-slowly-at say 3-4 MPH, slip the gear shift into Reverse, tap the throttle, This JARS the out put shaft GOVERNOR assy. if the Gov is stuck, this 'may' loosen it. Good Luck Thanks for the tips. I'll give them a check today. I had thought about the linkage also, but just have been working way too much lately and don't have the time to get done what I need to get done. Well, the problem is fixed! Turned out to be a linkage cable that was stuck. Sprayed some silicone on it and worked it back and forth and it now shifts like a champ. Thanks much for your tips. That's something I wouldn't have thought to check.
