Kickboxing has become a popular way to get into shape, and is an effective way to learn defend yourself using a combination of various martial art techniques. Knowing dress appropriately while fighting or working out is very important to your enjoyment of the sport, as well as your performance and your safety.
Instructions
1. Ask your instructor for specific guidelines they may have for what to wear while kickboxing. Some facilities may require you to purchase a specific shirt or gi, which is the more traditional type of martial arts uniform.
2. Wear shirts or tops that are either sleeveless, or have very loose, short sleeves. Kickboxing requires that you have freedom of movement, and a long-sleeved shirt can be restrictive.
3. Choose pants or shorts that are also loose, and won't restrict your kicking movements. Women may want to choose longer pants instead of shorts, since kickboxing involves a lot of high kicks.
4. Use a sturdy pair of cross training shoes if you're going to join a cardio kickboxing class, or any other discipline that will not require combat or contact with others. Otherwise, plan on sparring in bare feet.
5. Pick the right protective gear for the style of kickboxing you'll be practicing. Helmets should fit comfortably and should not restrict your vision in any way. Protective pads should also be snug without cutting off your blood circulation.
6. Log onto Kickboxing.com to find out the correct style of dress for each kickboxing discipline (see Resources below). Also, such online resources as AOL Fitness can give specific tips for cardio kickboxing attire (see Resources below).
Tips Warnings
Check if your kickboxing school also has a store attached to it. Many schools also sell equipment and attire, often at discounted prices for their members.
You should always wear a helmet and protective padding if you are entering a competitive style of kickboxing. This is imperative if you are under the age of 18.
Before you begin any strenuous exercise regimen, you should consult with your doctor. Kickboxing can put a lot of stress on your cardiovascular system, and there is a possibility of injury as well. Kickboxing is not generally recommended for people suffering from back problems or arthritis.
