Calculate A Sweet Spot For Ceiling Speakers

Ceiling speakers lay flush against the ceiling.

Alert listeners know how satisfying it is to hear music in a room with ceiling speakers carefully placed to create a listening sweet spot for which the acoustics are just right. They also know how frustrating it can be if speakers are not placed correctly and the sound resembles chaos rather than music. Although there are some rules for placing speakers, there is also an element of trial and error involved in finding exactly the right placement for your ceiling speakers.

Instructions

1. Use a chair for your prime listening location.

Place the chair where you will sit when you listen. The sweet spot will be calculated using the chair as the prime listening location. This spot should be away from the walls and toward the middle of the room.

2. A tape measure can be used to place each speaker the same distance away from a chair.

Place each speaker the same distance away from the chair but not next to each other. You can use your tape measure or even a piece of string that doesn't stretch to measure from a midpoint on the chair to each speaker, being sure to use the same measuring point on both speakers. The speakers should be separated from each other so the two speakers and the listening chair form a triangle, with all sides being equal. Check your manufacturer's instructions for a recommended separation distance between speakers.

3. Listen carefully to determine whether your speakers are correctly placed.

Listen. Because the acoustics of the room itself are also a factor in determining the sweet spot, you will have to sit in the chair and listen. If you have a very good system, even the slightest mistakes in measuring speaker distance can be discernible to perceptive listeners.

4. Adjust speaker location inch by inch since even subtle adjustments will make a difference. As you adjust one speaker, make sure you adjust the other in exactly the same way. You may want to use light pencil marks or painter's tape to mark your adjustments so you can move the speakers back to a previous location if you find one that worked better. This step will require some patience. Remember that every room is different--but with a little patience you will find the sweet spot that brings music to your ears.
