Wire A Ceiling Fan Speed Control & A Dimmer

Use a ceiling fan remote to control the fan's speed and lighting.

On old ceiling fans, you adjust the fan speed and the light using a set of pull chains. This can be an inconvenience if you have a piece of furniture positioned below the ceiling fan that you have to try to reach around, such as a table or bed. Instead, wire a fan speed control and dimmer into the ceiling fan and control what it does from anywhere in the house.

Instructions

1. Turn off power to the room from the main breaker box. Back out the screws securing the ceiling fan's canopy to the mounting bracket. Slide the canopy down so it rests on the ceiling fan's motor. Test the exposed wires with a circuit tester to ensure they are safe to work with.

2. Unscrew the wire nuts holding the ceiling fan's electrical wires together with the power-supply wires. Separate the wires.

3. Slide the speed control and dimmer receiver into the space in the mounting bracket. Connect wires from the receiver labeled "ceiling fan" to the same-colored wires coming from the fan. Twist a wire nut over each connection.

4. Connect wires from the receiver labeled for the power supply (usually "AC-in") to the same-colored wires coming from the ceiling. Twist a wire nut over each connection.

5. Restore power to the ceiling fan. Remove the back of the speed control and dimmer remote and insert batteries. Test the remote's communication with the receiver. If there seems to be interference, set the DIP switches on both the remote and the receiver to a different frequency.

6. Raise the ceiling fan's canopy back over the mounting bracket. Secure it in place with the screws you removed in Step 1.
