Use Macbook Pro Fan Control

The Macbook Pro fan can be directly controlled using additional applications installed on the computer, such as smcFanControl. Instead of allowing the Macbook Pro to automatically set the fan speed, you can specify the minimum speed for the fan to operate at. Fan control helps prevent system overheating in the event of a processor intensive task or a computer game.

Instructions

1. Download smcFanControl. Double-click this download once it completes to extract the folder.

2. Drag the "smcFanControl" icon to your applications folder. Double-click the icon and click "Open." Provide your system's password if one is present. Click "OK."

3. Click "Yes." Look at the information bar at the top of your screen. You should now see a number listing the fan speed of your Macbook Pro. The computer temperature is also displayed. Click the fan number and choose "Preferences."

4. Slide the minimum fan speed to a speed you are comfortable with. You may need to experiment with different minimum speeds to discover what works with your system. Click "Save."
