Replace A Cord On A Vintage Vornado Fan

In 1940 the O.A. Sutton Company manufactured the first Vornado fan. The fans became very popular because all that ever went wrong with them was that the cord wore out from use. As technology advancements made air conditioning affordable, the fan became archaic in people's minds. Sutton had a reputation for innovation, which allowed the company to expand the use of the Vornado fan. The durability and the high performance of the fan gave Sutton much to market, including ways to replace a worn-out electrical cord on the fan. The task of replacing an old cord takes only a modest knowledge of electrical matters and a few basic tools.

Instructions

1. Use the wire stripper to strip the ends of a three-wire electrical cord about ½ inch. Do this at both ends of the wire.

2. On the Vornado fan, remove the wires attached to the screw terminals on the motor with a screwdriver.

3. Mark which wire is hot (black), neutral (white) and ground (copper) by tracing the wires from the plug back to the motor. Attach the ground wire to the round prong. Attach the hot wire to the smaller flat prong. Attach the neutral wire to the larger flat prong.

4. Twist the new wires onto the screw terminals on the motor. Tighten the screws with a screwdriver.
