Create A Costume Of Frosty The Snowman

Create a Frosty costume using paper mache and spray paint.

Frosty the Snowman is a popular symbol of the winter holiday season. A Frosty costume is appropriate for a winter play, or even for your next Halloween party. Making your own costume is less expensive than purchasing one and requires little effort. To make a Frosty costume, you need little more than three large balloons, some liquid starch, newspaper and white clothing.

Instructions

1. Inflate three 36-inch balloons. Inflate one to 36 inches, one to 32 inches and one to 28 inches. Tie a piece of twine to the tied end of the balloons and hang them from a ceiling fan (turned off) or from eye hooks inserted in the ceiling.

2. Line the space below the hung balloons using a large plastic tarp or newspaper to protect your floors from the glue and spray paint you will use.

3. Pour half a bottle of liquid starch into a disposable dish. Liquid starch is available at your local grocery store in the cleaning supply aisle. If you prefer, make your own paper mache glue using your favorite recipe.

4. Tear strips of newspaper into 1-by-6-inch strips. Dip the strips into the liquid starch. Allow them to soak for 30 seconds each. Remove the strips and wipe the excess liquid starch from them using your fingers. Apply the strips to the surface of the balloons. Completely cover all three balloons, overlapping the strips as you go. Leave the strips to dry overnight. Apply a second layer of newspaper strips in the same manner as the first. Allow the second layer to dry for another 24 hours.

5. Leave the strips to dry overnight. Apply a second layer of newspaper strips in the same manner as the first. Allow the second layer to dry for another 24 hours.

6. Cut a 24-inch hole around where the tied end of the balloon had been on the 36-inch sphere using a utility knife. Cut a second hole opposite the first. Cut two 24-inch holes in the top and bottom of the 32-inch sphere. Cut one 24-inch hole in the 28-inch sphere. Discard all the cutout pieces. Cut two 4-inch holes in the sides of the 32-inch sphere. These are the armholes. Cut a 9-inch hole in the side of the 28-inch sphere. This is the face hole. Discard the cutouts.

7. Spray paint the outside of all three spheres using white paint. Allow the paint to dry for 24 hours.

8. Punch four holes around the circumference of each of the 24-inch cutout circles, except for one of the cutouts in the largest sphere, using a hole puncher. Space the holes every 6 inches.

9. Cut eight 6-inches pieces of white string. Feed four pieces of the string through the four holes in the largest sphere. Place the second largest sphere on top of the first. Feed the loose ends of the four pieces of string through the holes in the second sphere. Tie the loose ends together to secure the two spheres together.

10. Feed the last four pieces of string through the four holes in the top of the second sphere. Place the smallest sphere on top of the second. Align the spheres so the armholes of the middle sphere are on the side and the face hole is on the front. Feed the string through the holes in the third sphere. Tie the loose ends together to secure it.

11. Hot glue five 1-inch-wide black buttons on the front of the largest and middle spheres. Space the buttons 5-inches apart. Tie a long scarf, any color, around the spheres, between the top and middle sphere. Apply hot glue to the inside rim of a costume top hat. Place the top hat on top of the smallest sphere.

12. Dress in all white, including pants, long sleeve shirt, shoes, socks and gloves. Cover your face in white face paint. Use black face paint to create six 1/2-inch circles on your face to make a smile. Space the circles 1/2-inch apart. Paint your nose orange to mimic a carrot nose. Place a corn cob pipe in your mouth and carry a broom in your hand.
