Attach A Ceiling Fan Downrod

Fans on vaulted ceilings may require a downrod to maximize airflow.

A downrod can be installed with your ceiling fan to lower the fan away from the ceiling and the mounting bracket. This is done most commonly in rooms with vaulted ceilings. Because the wiring connections will be inside the cover attached to the mounting bracket, the wiring generally is run from the fan motor housing, through the hollow middle of the downrod, and up to the ceiling wires.

Instructions

1. Turn off the power to the ceiling fan wires at the wall switch and at the main breaker box.

2. Attach the ceiling fan's mounting bracket to the light box in the ceiling. Use the screws provided with the light box and follow the manufacturer's installation instructions. Pull the wires from the ceiling box through the middle hole on the mounting bracket. Move them out of the way as you mount the bracket.

3. Insert the wires from the fan motor unit through the bottom of the downrod and pull them out through the top. Place the mounting bracket cover over the top of the downrod. Attach the downrod to the top of the fan motor unit.

4. Hold the fan unit with the downrod and mounting plate cover attached close together. Position them so the wires coming out the top of the downrod can be attached to the wires coming from the ceiling box.

5. Attach the wires together by color -- black to black and white to white. Strip off 1/2 inch of insulation from the wires if necessary, using the wire strippers. Pair the matching-colored wires and twist the provided wire connectors over their ends to secure them. Wrap electrical tape over these connections, extending the tape about 1 inch up the wires past the wire connector. Attach the green wire to the grounding screw on the mounting bracket.

6. Attach the downrod to the mounting bracket, according to the manufacturer's directions. Some downrods have hooks to hold them in place, while others may match a groove on the mounting bracket to a tab on the top of the downrod.

7. Push the wiring back into the ceiling box as much as possible. Attach the mounting bracket's ceiling cover to the bracket, following the manufacturer's instructions.

8. Turn the electricity back on at the breaker box. Turn on the fan's wall switch. Make sure the motor is turned on with the pull chain. Verify the fan is working properly, then attach the fan blades according to the manufacturer's instructions.
