Mount A Junction Box For A Ceiling Fan

Ceiling fan

Ceiling fans are great energy savers, circulating air around the house and creating more desirable temperatures in summer or in winter. Making sure that the ceiling fan box is mounted properly is very important as the fan must be anchored to sturdy framing. A few methods of mounting a ceiling fan box allow the box to be properly mounted without tearing apart all the drywall on the ceiling.

Instructions

1. Set up your step ladder and climb until you can touch the section of the ceiling where you will install the fan. The fan should be installed against a joist. Hold up the fan junction box against the wall where you want the fan and trace around it with a pencil. Cut along the lines you traced with a drywall saw. Remove the piece that you have cut out and set it aside.

2. Take the fan box mounting bracket and slide it into the hole. Extend the bracket until it touches both floor joists. Use the fan junction box to determine the mounting height of the bracket. Slide your drill into the hole and drill the holes to hold the bracket on each side. This can be difficult because you are doing it blind, but you should be able to feel where the bracket holes are. Use a screwdriver to insert the 2-inch galvanized screws into the mounting bracket holes and start them into the holes. Use your drill with a phillips bit to drive the screws the rest of the way into the joists. Remove the drill and any other tools that remain in the ceiling cavity.

3. Pull the 3-wire 14 AWG wires over to the hole for the fan box. If they are not already present, wires will have to be run to the junction box before the final steps can be completed. Consult a qualified electrician to run wires over to the hole for the fan box if you need assistance with properly terminating and installing them.

4. Use the screw driver to knock out one of the punched holes (called knock outs) that allow wires to be inserted into the junction box. Attach the junction box to the junction box mounting clip on the bracket using the drill.
