Fix Ceiling Fan Lights That Don'T Work

A faulty ceiling fan light may indicate a short in the wiring.

Ceiling fans are either built with or without lights. Ceiling fans with lights are a bit like a combination of an air conditioner and a chandelier, without the cost of either. These fans have little technical wizardry that may confound the novice DIY repairman, but repairing a light can be dangerous when not done properly. If you have the owner's manual for your ceiling fan, look over the wiring diagram before diving into the repair.

Instructions

1. Flip the switch. If the fan doesn't turn on either, check the switches at the fuse box that control the room's electricity. Flip the switch to the on position.

2. Turn off the electricity to the room before working on the fan and set your ladder up underneath it.

3. Unscrew the mounting plate of the ceiling fan with a screwdriver and gently lower it; don't pull any of the wires too hard. Inspect the wires for damage and check that they are connected properly. Replace any faulty wiring if necessary. Replace the light once it is wired.

4. Remove the plate cover of the switch that controls the light. Check that all the wires are free of damage and correctly screwed in.

5. Unscrew the wires from the light switch and touch the probes of the voltmeter to the two colored wires leading from the light switch to the ceiling fan to check for continuity. Leave the black grounding wire out of the testing.
