Decorate Your Furniture With The Tin Ceiling Tile Look

Use a tin ceiling look on your furniture.

Tin tile ceilings create a focal point with a patterned design and help to hide imperfections in the ceiling. Similarly, tin tiles can be used or replicated to add an appealing layer to the furniture piece of your choice while also hiding any imperfections. The pressed design is available in a variety of patterns, and you can recreate the look by using tiles or wallpaper.

Instructions

Tin Tiles

1. Measure the object that you want to give the tin ceiling look to. Measure the length and width of each area that will be covered. You may want to leave a portion of the furniture piece uncovered, such as the legs of a table.

2. Select the tin tile that you want to use. Tin tile is available in a variety of colors, such as white, copper, silver and gold. You can also paint the tin to match the desired design. Select a size that is proportionate to the project you are working on. For example, a larger tile is better for a large furniture piece, such as a coffee table or buffet. A smaller tile is better for a smaller furniture piece, such as a nightstand.

3. Use a tile saw to cut any tiles if necessary. You will have to cut some of the tin tiles if the furniture piece is at a dimension that doesn't correspond evenly with the dimensions of your tiles. For example, if you are trying to cover a table that is 9 inches wide and your tiles are 4-inches square, you will have to either cut the ending tile to 1 inch, or cut all of the tiles to 3 inches for an even application.

4. Use a caulking gun containing a bottle of construction adhesive to apply glue to the back of one of the tiles. Cover the back of the tile in a swirl pattern, covering the top, bottom, center and sides with adhesive.

5. Lay the first tile on the bottom left-hand corner of the furniture piece, making sure that the tile is laid straight and butting against the end of the furniture piece. Press the tile firmly into the furniture piece. Rub the tile firmly in place around the edges.

6. Continue to lay and adhere the tiles to the furniture piece. Work your way from side to side and bottom to top. Let dry. Construction adhesive can take up to 24 hours to dry, but follow the manufacturer's instructions on the container to ensure adequate dry time.

7. Add nails to further enforce the tiles if you prefer. Hammer ¾-inch long nails about 2 inches from the corners of each tile. Use coordinating colored nails if possible. As an alternative, use 1-inch brads.

Wallpaper

8. Purchase wallpaper with a tin ceiling design to cover a round or asymmetrical piece of furniture. Faux tin wallpaper is available in a variety of colors that resemble tin and other metals.

9. Apply adhesive directly to your furniture piece according to the wallpaper manufacturer's instructions. Some wallpapers require you to add water to the paper or apply a wallpaper paste, while other wallpapers come with a ready-stick backing.

10. Roll the wallpaper over your furniture piece. Leave excess wallpaper over the sides if applicable.

11. Trim the excess paper with a pair of scissors. The wallpaper should be flush against the edges.

12. Roll another piece of wallpaper over any other edges, such as the side of a table. Trim the excess wallpaper from the side until you have covered and trimmed all the way around the furniture piece.
