Install Harbor Breeze Fans

A properly installed ceiling fan.

Harbor Breeze ceiling fans are sold only at Lowe's and come in a variety of affordable sizes, styles and finishes. These fans help conserve energy and lower the costs for heating and cooling at home all year-round. They're reversible and blow down for cool air in the summer and up for warmer air in the winter. Installing a Harbor Breeze fan is a do-it-yourself project that will save money and add style to any room in the home.

Instructions

1. Turn off the power, at the breaker box, to the light fixture where the fan will be installed. Remove the canopy over the fixture on the ceiling. Use a circuit tester to check if any of the wires are still hot. Wait until they've cooled then remove the current light fixture.

2. Install the mounting bracket. Remove the screws from the fan motor and set them aside for later use. Remove the mounting bracket from the canopy and attach it to the ceiling with lock washers and screws. Make sure the J-hook is towards the floor. Pull all electrical wires through the mounting bracket in the center.

3. Assemble the parts of the fan (except for the blades) on the floor. Place the downrod into the mount with the ball end pointing toward the ceiling. Pull the lead wires through the canopy, trim, and downrod carefully. Insert the rod into the housing and secure the rod to the housing with the connector and cotter pins. Tighten the set screws on the side of the downrod with a screwdriver. Bend the cotter pin legs to make sure the connector pins are secure.

4. Lift the assembled unit up to the mounting bracket on the ceiling. Insert the ball end of the downrod into the bracket. Connect the green and white neutral wires to the same colored wires in the metal ceiling box. With a fan that has a light, connect the remaining wires to the hot wire in the box. Secure the wire connectors with electrical tape and tuck them into the electrical box. Make sure the tab located inside the hanger bracket, at the bottom, is placed in the groove of the hanger ball before securing the canopy. Slide the canopy up the hanger bracket. Hold the canopy in the correct position and secure it with the proper screws.

5. Mount each bracket to the fan blades with the screws and washers supplied. Put all screws in place first and then tighten them. Repeat the same process to mount the blades with brackets to the secured motor. Make sure all screws and washers are secured tightly before moving on.

6. Install the light kit. If it is not wired and in place already, remove the cover plate from the fan. Remove the plug located in the center of the cover plate. Push the black and white wires through the holes in the cover plate and secure the plate tightly to the light kit with the screws provided to ensure that the light will not vibrate loose. Find the white and blue wires inside the switch housing labeled "for light". Use wire connectors to connect them to the light kit wires. Connect white to white and blue to black. Secure each connection with electrical tape to prevent the connectors from vibrating loose. Push all wires into the switch housing carefully before attaching the light kit to the housing with the screws provided.
