Paint Suspended Ceiling Panels

Suspended ceiling panels readily accept latex paint.

Suspended ceilings, with their metal grids holding the ceiling tiles, are a common sight in offices, institutions and basements. Any room where you wish to hide ceiling ductwork or insulate against noise can benefit from suspended ceilings. As useful as these ceilings are, they are not especially attractive. However, you can paint the ceiling tiles and the metal grid with latex paint that matches your room d cor, thereby improving the appearance.

Instructions

1. Move furniture out of the room so you have space to reach the metal grid with the stepladder. Spread dropcloths over the floor.

2. Remove the suspended ceiling tiles carefully and stack them for painting.

3. Apply painter's tape to the walls adjacent to the metal grid to enable you to paint the grids without painting the walls.

4. Paint the grids, applying the paint in a thin and even layer.

5. Allow the grids to dry for about eight hours and then remove the painter's tape.

6. Place a ceiling tile between two sawhorses for painting. Roll the paint onto the front side of the ceiling tile, coating it evenly.

7. Move the ceiling tile to an area on the dropcloth where it can dry.

8. Paint the fronts of each ceiling tile and allow the tiles to dry for about eight hours. Apply a second coat to the fronts of each ceiling tile and allow the tiles to dry again for about eight hours.

9. Paint the backs of each ceiling tile and allow the tiles to dry again for about eight hours.

10. Replace the tiles back into the metal grids after they dry.
