Remove A Hugger Ceiling Fan

Hugger fans are designed for rooms with lower ceiling clearance. Because of this, hugger fans have less distance between the electrical box it mounts to and the bottom of the fan motor. Although the clearance is diminished, a hugger fan still uses an electrical box cover, a hanging mount and standard wiring. Removing one is no more difficult than removing a fan with more clearance.

Instructions

1. Turn off the power to the breaker box for the room in which the hugger ceiling fan is located. Never attempt to disconnect wiring connections with the power turned on.

2. Remove the light bulb covers and the light bulbs from the ceiling fan if the fan has a light kit installed. This will prevent breaking glass in the event you accidentally drop the fan while removing it.

3. Remove the screws that hold the ceiling mount cover against the hanger shaft of the ceiling fan. Lower the cover downward and rest it on top of the fan motor. This exposes the hanger, electrical box and the safety wire.

4. Remove the screw that secures the safety wire to the electrical box. In some cases, this wire might be missing.

5. Pull the electrical wires out of the electrical box. Remove the wire nuts from each connection and pull all of the wires apart. Pull the wires connected to the fan downward. Place wire nuts onto each of the electrical wires extending from the ceiling and then tape each wire nut to the wire with electrical tape.

6. Lift up on the ceiling fan and remove the fan from the hanger.
