Decorate A Small Space With High Ceilings

Sheer, floor-length curtains let light in and accent a high ceiling.

If you have to make do with a small studio, loft, apartment or even office, high ceilings are a definite advantage. They create an illusion of a larger space. If you take it a step further with plenty of light and using the walls and air space, the room can transform into an inviting and comfortable nook with seemingly plenty of space.

Instructions

1. Install an ornate chandelier, pendant lamp or ceiling fan from the ceiling. It moves the eye up and gives the small space more depth. Install a ceiling anchor into a joist and then hang the chandelier per manufacturer instructions.

2. Place indoor plants and container trees that accent the space's height. Place a dwarf crepe myrtle in a corner by a window, for instance. The tree fills the empty corner with texture and adds a spot of bright color to the room.

3. Decorate with large, tall artwork and wall hangings. Tapestries, gigantic paintings, wall murals and dramatic decal motifs work well, especially on an accent wall behind the sofa or in a small kitchen with high ceilings.

4. Install hanging or floating bookshelves to store books or display accent pieces. Store books by color or alternate stacking them flat and on end to create variety. Store books and individual sculptures, vases and accent pieces in a cubby system in a color or finish that complements your color scheme.

5. Hang long, sheer curtains on the windows. Hanging curtains just below the floor line adds an elegant and elongated touch. The sheer fabric lets light into the tiny space, expanding it.

6. Place mirrors and reflective surfaces throughout the space to make the most of your light. Fill dark corners with a table or floor lamp.

7. Hang holiday decor like Christmas ornaments from the ceiling instead of on a bulky tree. It changes up the space for big holidays or occasions without taking up precious floor space.
