Fix A Stucco Ceiling Leak

A stucco ceiling, sometimes called a popcorn ceiling, has a textured appearance and is composed of small rivulets of plaster or a similar substance. Like drywall and paneling, a stucco ceiling is prone to water damage from a leaking pipe and, once damaged, may bubble outward, turn a brownish shade and begin to peel or break away from the ceiling. You can repair a water-damaged stucco ceiling yourself to remove the damage while maintaining its unique texture.

Instructions

1. Put on a face mask and goggles to avoid breathing in the dust and getting it into your eyes.

2. Hang thin plastic sheeting from the ceiling around the damaged area with thumbtacks to reduce the amount of cleanup you will have after the project and to protect other surfaces from texture splatter.

3. Place a trash can under the damaged area to collect the texture material as you scrape it off the ceiling.

4. Scrape the water-stained stucco with a putty knife until all of the damaged texture has been removed.

5. Apply a stain-blocking primer to the damaged area of the ceiling with a paintbrush or spray the area with an aerosol primer. Allow the primer to dry thoroughly before continuing.

6. Spray the primed area with a can of aerosol ceiling texture. Hold the can approximately 10 inches away from the ceiling and spray it in quick, even sweeps. Allow the texture to dry.

7. Apply fresh paint to the texture to match the rest of the ceiling. If you can't find a paint that matches the existing color, you will have to repaint the entire ceiling to ensure that the patched area doesn't stand out.
