Install Remote Control Hampton Bay Fan

Install Remote Control Hampton Bay Fan

One of the first known examples of remote control was introduced by Nikola Tesla at the Electrical Exposition in 1898 with his demonstration of a radio-controlled boat, according to the Public Broadcasting Service. Since that time, the love affair with remote controls for anything from our television to a ceiling fan has flourished. Hampton Bay ceiling fans, a proprietary brand of the Home Depot, offer several fans with the remote control option and can be installed by someone without much electrical knowledge.

Instructions

1. Turn off the breaker in the main service panel that provides power to the ceiling fan circuit.

2. Assemble the ceiling fan by following the directions of the manufacturer. Attach the ceiling fan hanging bracket to the ceiling fan electrical box. The hanging bracket and the screws are provided with the ceiling fan mounting hardware.

3. Look at the remote receiver and identify the two sets of wires. The first set connects directly to the fan wires and consists of a black, white and blue wire. The second set consists of a black and white wire that connects directly to the house wiring.

4. Turn the remote receiver over and remove the battery cover from the back of the remote control to expose the dip switches. Confirm that both sets of dip switches match one another. Slide the battery cover onto the remote control.

5. Hang the ceiling fan from the hanging bracket before you wire the fan. Wire the bare copper ground wire from the house wiring to the green ground wire attached to the hanging bracket by twisting an orange wire connector to both wires, connecting them together.

6. Wire the remote receiver to the house wiring from the electrical box. Twist a wire connector to the white wire from the receiver and the white wire from the house wiring, connecting them together. Repeat the connection for the black wire from the receiver and the black wire from the house wiring.

7. Wire the ceiling fan to the remote receiver. Twist a wire connector onto the black wire from the ceiling fan and the black wire from the remote. Twist another wire connector onto the two white wires from the receiver and ceiling fan. Complete the connection by twisting a wire connector onto the two blue wires from the receiver and fan.

8. Place the remote receiver inside the hanging bracket and push the wiring into the electrical box. Attach the ceiling fan canopy to the hanging bracket to cover the wiring, remote and bracket. The canopy connects with four screws provided with the ceiling fan mounting hardware.

9. Turn the breaker on inside the main service panel that powers the ceiling fan.
