Make A Simple Ceiling To Floor Bookcase

Store your library in a simple ceiling-to-floor bookcase

A simple bookcase not only adds storage space to your home, it provides a focal point for decoration and display of your library and cherished keepsakes. A simple and effective design will serve you well for many years and doesn't require extensive woodworking experience to construct, either. With readily available materials and tools you'll be able to complete a satisfactory project.

Instructions

1. Measure the distance from your floor to the ceiling along the wall when you intend to place the bookcase.

2. Cut two 1-by-10-inch boards to match the distance measured in the first step. Sand the cut edges of the boards to remove any splinters or burrs. Cut two 36-inch long pieces of 1-by-10-inch boards. Sand the cut edges to remove splinters and burrs.

3. Place the first two boards parallel to each other and the second two boards between them at each end, forming a box. Screw together the boards where they meet.

4. Measure and mark the interior of the bookcase for the shelves. The exact number and spacing of shelves will depend on the height of your ceiling and the types of books and other objects you'll be putting in the bookcase. It's a good idea to measure some of the objects you'll be putting in the bookcase when planning this out.

5. Cut the shelves for your bookcase. Each will be 36-inches long. Sand them as in the previous steps. Place the shelves into the bookcase and screw them in with wood screws from the outside of the bookcase.

6. Cut a sheet of plywood to match the outer dimensions of the bookcase. Nail this to the back of the bookcase with 6D nails.

7. Paint or stain your bookcase to match your interior. Let the paint or stain dry and then place the bookcase in position.
