If you are using open wires instead of a light, check the wires with a multimeter to verify that there is no electrical flow.
2. Unscrew the screws holding the existing light fixture in place and gently pull the fixture down.
3. Disconnect the wires that are going to the light by twisting the wire connectors to the left.
4. Remove the old electrical box from the ceiling by either unscrewing the brace screws or prying it loose with a pry bar if it is nailed.
5. Trace a circle with a 4-inch diameter next to the old hole. Cut out the hole with a drywall saw while having a friend hold a vacuum cleaner attachment next to you to catch the dust.

7. Pull the existing wires through the spaces in the power box.
8. Put a small line of urethane-based adhesive on the new fan's medallion and center the medallion over the new hole. Press it into place and secure it to the ceiling with four 6d finishing nails. Be sure that the nails are driven into the joist beam. Countersink the nail's heads and fill the holes with Spackle.
9. Pull the wires through the new ceiling plate and secure the ceiling plate into place by tightly fastening the screws. Once again, do not leave any room for give.
10. Put the rest of the fan pieces together back on the ground following the instructions included in the package.
11. Hook up one side of the fan to the ceiling plate and connect the existing wires to the fan's wires. The wire colors should match. Twist the wire connectors to the right and make sure they are tightly in place. Remember that you need to twist as hard as you can by hand.
12. Attach the fan blades onto the motor with your power screwdriver.
