Redo Paint On Ceiling Fans

Painting a ceiling fan is much cheaper than replacing it.

An ugly ceiling fan can ruin an otherwise stylish room. Don't buy a new fan to match your decor if a new coat of paint will do the job. For the cost of just one can of spray paint and about an hour of your time, your ceiling fan will appear as good as new and your room will be rid of its eyesore.

Instructions

1. Turn off the power to your ceiling fan. As an extra precaution, turn off the breaker to the room in addition to turning the fan off via the wall switch.

2. Unscrew the base of the wall fan, using a screwdriver. Typically, four screws attach the base of the fan to the ceiling just below where the two meet. Carefully detach the wiring to the fan--label the wires with colored tape if you are unfamiliar with how the fan is attached.

3. Set the fan onto a dropcloth in a well-ventilated area. Unscrew the blades from the base. If your fan has metal attachments screwed onto the blades, remove those as well.

4. Clean all pieces with denatured alcohol and a rag.

5. Sand the pieces lightly with steel wool. This will create a rough surface to which paint can more easily adhere. Wipe the surfaces with a damp cloth to remove dust particles.

6. Spray the blades, base and other metal components with spray paint. Use thin layers instead of one thick layer. To get even coverage, move the spray can from side to side and keep the can in constant motion. Allow the fan to dry completely, per the manufacturer's instructions, before you put it back together and reattach it to the ceiling.
