Remove Links From The Chain Of A Hanging Light

Different types of light fixtures are available for residential and commercial use. Many fixtures are designed to either be mounted to or suspended from the ceiling. Some suspended lights such as chandeliers can be designed to use lightweight chains for support. Adjusting the distance that the light fixture is suspended from the ceiling requires that links of the chain be removed to shorten or added for more length. A few simple tools are required to accomplish the task.

Instructions

1. Turn off the power to the light fixture or unplug the fixture if possible to reduce the potential for injury.

2. Hold the link in the lighting support chain to be removed and pull the electrical cord threaded through the links out and away so it will not be damaged.

3. Position the jaws of a pair of pliers on one side of the link next to the cut on one side of the chain link. Place a second pair of pliers on the other side of the cut and clamp the link with the jaws.

4. Hold the handles of both sets of pliers firmly. Twist the lighting link open by turning one pair of pliers away from you and one toward you to separate the link at the cut point.

5. Remove the link by sliding it out of the two links to which it is attached.
