Make Coved Ceilings

Making a coved celing can be done with the help of a miter saw.

A coved molding refers to a molding with a concave, or hollowed inward, profile. A coved ceiling molding adds interest and flair to a ceiling while concealing imperfections at the junction where the ceiling meets the walls. Making the molding for a coved ceiling requires precisely angled cuts, but you can do the work yourself and save the cost of hiring a professional service to install your coved ceiling for you.

Instructions

1. Use a tape measure to measure each wall length in the room which you intend to create the coved ceiling. Ensure your measurement is accurate by measuring along the top of the wall, at the junction point where it meets the ceiling.

2. Position the strips of cove molding on a work surface. Measure and mark the strips with a pencil to match the measurements of the walls. Mark the back side of the molding strips to indicate whether it will be used for an inside or outside corner.

3. Lay one strip on the miter saw, so that the bottom of the strip lies against the fence of the saw. The top part of the strips should be positioned against the saw table.

4. Set the saw miter for a 45-degree angle cut. Position the long point of the miter against the molding strip's back side to cut any inside corners. Position the long point of the miter against the molding strip's front side for inside corner cuts.

5. Pull the trigger on the saw, and push down on the wood until the saw cuts through the strip. Lift the saw, release the trigger and remove the cut molding from the saw.

6. Locate the wall studs with a stud finder. Mark the location of the studs with a pencil. Position each molding piece into place on the walls where they meet the ceiling. Hammer nails into the molding strips to secure them to the walls.
