Painting a textured ceiling takes a lot of patience, but it can be done.
Painting is already a time-consuming and potentially frustrating project, but throw a popcorn ceiling into the mix and you may be tempted to put down your paintbrush. The secret to getting a good finish on this textured ceiling is to choose an application method that coats the ceiling evenly and quickly.
Paint Sprayer
Buy or rent a paint sprayer from your local hardware store. The kind that sits inside a five-gallon bucket will ensure a professional-quality finish on your ceiling. The sprayer consists of a metal pump and a long hose with a spray nozzle on the end. Once you crank up the machine, all you have to do is point and spray.
Paint Roller
Apply paint to a popcorn ceiling with a roller to cover the maximum area in a short amount of time. The rolling motion will provide an even coverage, especially if you use a high-quality wool roller instead of a synthetic material. Rollers can be used with either a ladder or an extra-long handle to reach the ceiling.
Paintbrush
Tap your paintbrush along the popcorn ceiling. Do not attempt to paint a with a paintbrush using long strokes, since this will result in an uneven finish, gaps and a lot of crumbling ceiling texture. Instead, fill the paintbrush with a moderate amount of paint (not quite enough to drip) and lightly tap it against the ceiling.
