Put Crown Molding on Vaulted Ceilings
Crown molding is one of the more difficult types of molding to work with. Cutting the right angles for it can be extremely difficult and require a great deal of patience. Vaulted ceilings are ceilings that point upward and are not flat like most common ceilings. Installing crown molding in those ceilings will follow the same typical steps as putting crown molding on a regular ceiling. Measuring the angles for the miter cuts is the key to installing the molding properly.
Instructions
1. Run a tape measure along vaulted ceiling to determine how much crown molding will be needed for installation. Add up the total linear feet and add 10 percent for cuts that will need to be made.
2. Measure the first angle of the vaulted ceiling with a protractor beginning at any corner of the room. Put the center of the protractor exactly where the angle meets and move the protractor so one of the sides reads 0 degrees. Record the number where the other side meets the protractor to get the measurement of the first angle. Run the tape measure along the crown molding and mark the distance where the cut will need to be made.
3. Turn the molding upside down and slide it into the miter saw so the top of the crown is along the base of the saw and the bottom is propped up on the fence of the saw. Plug in the saw and turn the blade to half of the recorded measurement in the direction of the first angle. Line up the blade of the saw with the mark on the molding and turn on the saw. Pull down on the lever and cut through the crown molding right on the mark.
4. Line up the crown molding at the top of the wall where it meets the ceiling and verify that the angle cut fits perfectly into the first corner. Insert a nail every 6 inches into the center of the crown molding beginning at one end and working all the way to the other. Install the next piece of crown in the same manner and continue until reaching the next corner of the room.
5. Measure this angle in the same manner as the previous one and turn the blade of the saw to half of the recorded angle measurement in either direction. Cut the angle and rotate the saw to the same angle in the opposite direction. Cut the measurement again. Match up the two corner pieces to make sure they fit together properly. Line up the pieces along the wall to make sure they are correct and nail them to the wall in the same manner as the previous pieces. Continue around the entire room the same way, making sure to measure the angle of each corner with a protractor and install a nail every 6 inches along the crown molding.
