Paint Ceilings The Same Color As The Wall

The paint colors you select for your space can affect how the room is perceived, including its size. For instance, light colors can make a room seem bigger, while dark colors can make a room seem smaller than it actually is. But don't forget to factor in the ceiling in room painting. A traditional white ceiling makes the room feel airy, but you can create other effects with color. Painting the ceiling the same color as the walls can soften dramatic architectural details as well as create a cozy, inviting space.

Instructions

1. Choose your paint color. Think about how you'd like to use this space and which colors will fit with this function. Brighter colors are more dramatic and stimulating, while paler colors are more conducive to relaxing. Also, consider how the color will look with any existing features in the room, such as furniture or lighting fixtures. If you want to highlight a warm-hued couch, try a cool color scheme with greens and blues.

2. Buy your ceiling and wall paints. Your ceiling paint will be a different paint from your wall paint because the ceiling has different needs than the walls. Ceiling paint tends to dry faster and splatter less, but wall paint tends to be more durable because it's more exposed to wear and tear. Buy ceiling paint that is one or two shades lighter than your wall paint to match colors.

3. Prepare the room for painting. Remove as much furniture as you can. Cover the entire floor with drop cloths and any remaining furniture or fixtures with plastic.

4. Paint the ceiling before you paint the walls. Paint areas that can't be roller-painted easily, such as the area where the ceiling meets the wall, with a paintbrush using straight, even strokes. For a flat ceiling, roll paint on in a straight, back-and-forth pattern in sections of about four to six feet. After you finish each section, move your ladder over to the area next to it and paint that section, making sure to overlap a little for an even paint job. For a vaulted ceiling, apply paint with a roller brush in straight lines on both sides of the vault.

5. Paint the walls. Apply paint with a brush in areas around windowsills, doors and baseboards first, and then use the roller brush to apply paint.
