Access A Panel Built Into Your Drywall Ceiling

A removable panel in a ceiling can provide you with the ability to access electrical wiring or plumbing. The panel's location usually corresponds to where shutoff valves for plumbing or electrical connection boxes are placed. These are typically the locations you may need to access easily. It is a good idea to familiarize yourself with the location of access panels and how they're secured so, when needed, you can remove them quickly.

Instructions

1. Inspect the access panel and determine how it is secured to the ceiling. Some panels are held on with screws, and some have trim that nails to the ceiling, holding the access panel in place.

2. Install a driver bit into an electric drill and remove the screws if the access panel is secured in this way. Use a driver bit that matches the type of screw used, either Phillips head or standard. Ensure that you support the access panel with one hand while you remove all of the screws with the drill.

3. Place a small block of wood against the ceiling if the access panel is secured with trim nailed to the ceiling. Use a claw hammer to pry out the nails and remove the trim. Ensure that the block of wood is kept under the hammer head to protect the ceiling. Support the access panel as you remove the trim so it does not fall.
