Make Ceilings Look Taller

If you have a room in your home that has a low ceiling, it can make the whole area look small and cramped. No matter how you decorate the room, if the ceiling is low, it will affect how the eyes perceive the size of the room. To make your ceilings look taller, all it takes are a few decorating tricks, such as colors, vertical stripes, crown molding and creative painting.

Instructions

1. Paint the ceiling the same color as the walls. That way, the ceiling won't look like a separate area. It will simply blend into the walls and give both the ceiling and the walls height. Choose light colors, which make spaces look larger and airier.

2. Paint the walls of the rooms in vertical stripes to make your ceiling look taller. The stripes draw the eye upward and "lift" the ceiling. You may also use striped wallpaper.

3. Paint the ceiling a sky blue color. You could even be really creative and paint clouds, birds or airplanes on the ceiling. Paint them small enough so they look far away. Use decals if you prefer.

4. Glue polyurethane crown molding on the walls 6 inches down from the ceiling. Paint the wall area above the molding the same color as the ceiling. This will create an illusion of a higher wall.

5. Install pilasters, plinths and capitals to make your ceiling look taller. These decorative columns are usually used to frame windows, doorways and fireplaces. The tall columns will give the illusion of ceiling height by drawing the eye upward.
