Install A Hook In A Ceiling Beam

Pad the ceiling hook with a rag and turn it with pliers.

Ceiling hooks come in plain and decorative styles for suspending plants, glass art, mobiles and other decorative objects. They also serve to hold up chains, cords and some types of chandeliers or ceiling fans. Check the weight rating on the package when purchasing ceiling hooks to insure that it will hold the weight of the suspended item safely. Installing a ceiling hook goes smoothly with the right preparation and tools. Choose a sturdy ladder and enlist an assistant's help for safety. The hook installation will take only a few minutes.

Instructions

1. Mark the spot for the ceiling hook with chalk or pencil.

2. Choose a drill bit a little smaller than the shank of the ceiling hook. The shank is the smooth area below the threads that screw in. Drill a hole 1/2 inch deeper than the hook's threads. Alternatively, hammer a nail narrower than the ceiling hook an inch into the beam to start the hole for the hook. Remove the nail carefully with the claw end of the hammer.

3. Insert the screw-end of the hook into the hole and twist the hook to the right to start installing it in the ceiling beam.

4. Fold a rag or washcloth over the hook to protect the metal from scratches and grasp the covered hook in the pliers.

5. Screw the hook into the beam until 1/2 inch of the shank disappears into the beam and the open end of the hook faces the direction you want it. For a small or short-shank hook, screw it in just until the threads are all inside the beam.
