Types Of Home Ceiling Decor

Appropriate ceiling decor complements the room.

Ceiling adornment is intended to highlight and enhance the entire design scheme of the room as a whole. When the adornment of the ceiling draws so much attention that other design elements in the room fail to be part of the whole, the ceiling is dressed inappropriately. Attend to the plan for ceiling decor during the initial planning process for the entire room. Avoid spur of the moment purchases that will fail as solutions once they are installed.

Ceiling Medallion

The most famous use of the ceiling medallion is found in the rooms designed by Robert Adam in 18th century Great Britain. The ceiling medallion is the ceiling dressing for the light fixture. It is essential for excellent interior design. Select a medallion that is copacetic with the design theme and in scale with the light fixture. A more elaborate room that is a period reproduction may also used stacked medallions. Avoid unnecessary expense. The resin medallions at the local lighting store suffice for the average home.

Ceiling Paper

Ceiling paper is the counter part of wallpaper. Rarely is a ceiling papered when the walls are not. The exception to this axiom is the use of papers depicting the decorative tin ceiling. Use these papers only when restoring an historic home if the expense of the decorative tin is itself cost prohibitive. Other ceiling papers must complement the wallpaper. Find coordinating ceiling paper in standard wallpaper books. Wallpaper designers and textile designers incorporate the design of ceiling papers into the selections of each sample book.

Ceiling Molding

Robert Adam also mastered and advanced the use of ceiling molding in geometric boxes to accent the lines of the ceiling. Others have followed in his footsteps for centuries. Look for molding strips that are lightweight and narrow. Select a cyma recta or cyma reversa design rather than just a strip of flat wood. The visual effect of the running footage of the molding's slight curvature will enhance the entire ceiling.

Light Fixtures

Whether grand or humble, imported or handmade, the ceiling mounted light fixture is part of the design solution for the room. Select fixtures that provide more than adequate light. High ceilings require multiple fixtures or a fixture that hangs extended from a decorative apparatus. Install a dimmer switch for better control of the amount of light. Avoid ostentatious fixtures that are beautiful, but nonetheless out of place in the home.
