Use Molding To Create Ceiling Designs

Any home can be beautified with the addition of a creative ceiling design using molding. The most common ceiling molding includes domes, medallions, and crown molding. Depending upon the ceiling area and height, many different varieties of moldings can be utilized to create a tremendous space. Installation of moldings is a relatively easy task and requires only a few tools, but can also be physically challenging. Ceiling design will add personality to your home, so choose moldings that will say something about you.

Instructions

New Construction Ceiling Dome Installation

1. Clean the ceiling. Be sure that all loose particles have been removed. Wait until it dries before continuing.

2. Locate your breaker box and turn off the power.

3. Invert the dome against ceiling and trace lightly around the edge with a pencil. Remove the dome and measure in 3 inches.

4. On the back of the dome you will find hangers. Attach the dome to the ceiling joists using wood screws. To better secure the dome, use construction wire to connect the dome hangers with the screws. Ensure that the dome is level before continuing to Step 5.

5. Install ceiling drywall around the dome. Finish this area as you would any other drywall surface.

6. Apply caulk around the dome using a caulking gun. Smooth the area with your finger.

Medallion Installation

7. Clean the ceiling. Remove all loose particles. Wait until the ceiling dries before continuing.

8. Locate the breaker box and turn off the power.

9. Trace an outline of the lighting fixture base onto the medallion with a pencil. Cut along the outline with a drywall saw and smooth the edges with a piece of sandpaper.

10. Center the medallion around the electrical component of the lighting fixture. Make sure that all wires are easily accessible.

11. While holding the medallion against the ceiling, make sure that the lighting fixture can be properly installed and securely tightened. Make necessary changes as needed. Remove the lighting fixture.

12. Using a caulking gun, apply adhesive caulk to the back of the medallion. Press firmed against the ceiling.

13. Install the light fixture. Shift the medallion as needed to ensure it is perfectly centered around the fixture.

14. Secure the medallion into the ceiling using a drill and trim-head screws. Cover the screw holes with caulk and remove excess with finger.

Crown Molding Installation

15. Measure walls to determine the amount of molding you will need to buy. Crown molding can be purchased at any home improvement store. It is better to have too much than to have too little, so always round up your measurements.

16. Decide how you will install the pieces of crown molding. Place a piece of molding against the wall and snap a chalk line against the bottom edge to create a line of installation.

17.Find the studs in the wall. Use a pencil to mark their positions.

18. Using a tape measure, measure the wall for the first piece of molding. Using this measurement, cut the molding using a miter saw.

19. Place the molding against the wall and secure it with nails. Place nails in studs approximately a half inch from the top edge and bottom edge of the molding.

20. Determine if the remaining corners are inside corners or outside corners. If they are all inside corners, simply cut one end of the molding with a coped cut and the other with a square cut. If you have outside corners, the two adjoining pieces will need to be cut at opposite 45 degree angles so they can be pieced together correctly.

21. Nail molding accordingly against the wall/ceiling. Use putty to cover any visible nail holes.
