Make Bows Out Of Ribbon For Presents

A basic pom pom gift bow is easy to make yourself.

Decorating wrapped presents is an enjoyable part of putting together a gift. Unfortunately, elaborate gift bows are often expensive and may be quickly discarded after the gift is opened. With a simple spool of ribbon, you can create your own gift bows instead. These creations are both a frugal alternative to store-bought bows and an opportunity to create a one-of-a-kind gift presentation. Create several at once, and you will have a full supply of gift wrapping accessories for future occasions.

Instructions

1. Cut a length of ribbon to about three yards.

2. Wrap the ribbon in a loop six inches long. Continue to wrap, overlapping the ribbon, nine times around.

3. Flatten the ribbon loop. Snip off a small triangle at each of the four corners.

4. Carefully unfold the loop, keeping the trimmed areas together and lined up. Refold the loop so the point that was previously the center is moved to either end and the trimmed areas become the center of the shape. The diagonal corners will now create two V shapes on the top and bottom of the ribbon loop, making the center of the loop thinner than the rest.

5. Wrap a thin piece of wire around the center of the loop, within the V shapes, to secure. Firmly twist or knot the wire at the end.

6. Reach inside either end of the ribbon shape and pull out the innermost loop. Pull the first loop to right, the next loop to the left and so on until all of the layers have been pulled out.

7. Adjust the various loops around the bow, twisting some toward the top to fill out the shape and keeping others near the base. The wire should be completely concealed by the numerous loops of ribbon.

8. Affix the finished bow to your gift with glue or tape. You can also thread another ribbon through the wire on the underside of the bow, wrap the ribbon around the gift and attach the gift bow in this manner.

Tips Warnings

This project will make a gift bow about six inches wide. Make a smaller loop for a smaller bow or a larger one for a giant bow.
