Remove A Single Handle Bathtub Faucet

The single-handle faucet is the most popular faucet design for bathtubs. This type of faucet regulates not only the flow of water that exits the bathtub's spout, but also the water's temperature. Most of the problems associated with single-handle faucets can be traced to the single rubber ring located at the base of the faucet, which tends to wear out over time. Replacing either the rubber ring or the faucet itself is a simple task, but the existing faucet must, of course, be removed first.

Instructions

1. Gain access to the handle's single retaining screw by first removing the plastic index cap from the center of the handle. Remove the cap by simply prying it off the handle with the blade of a utility knife.

2. Remove the handle to reveal the chrome inner sleeve by first removing the single screw from the center of the handle with a Phillips head screwdriver, then by pulling the handle away from the faucet assembly.

3. Pull the cylindrical-shaped chrome inner sleeve out of the faucet assembly to remove it.

4. Remove the chrome trim plate, sometimes called the escutcheon plate, to reveal the faucet. To remove the plate, remove the screw(s) from the face of the plate with a Phillips head screwdriver, then pull the plate away from the faucet assembly.

5. Turn the water supply off at the two water supply shutoff valves. One valve is located on either side of the faucet. One valve controls the hot water supply, and the other controls the supply of cold water. Each valve has a slot cut into its face. Insert the blade of a flathead screwdriver into each slot, then twist each valve in a clockwise direction to turn the water off.

6. Grasp the U-shaped retaining clip located at the top of the faucet with a pair of needle-nose pliers, then pull the clip upwards to remove it.

7. Pull the faucet out of the faucet assembly to complete the removal.
