Build An Overhead Garage Storage Unit

Adding storage space in your garage? Look away from the conventional solution of adding shelves along the wall, and consider an overhead storage unit for your garage. An overhead garage storage unit is great for storing items you don't need all the time in an out of the way and safe location. This overhead garage storage unit is made from simple materials, and is a great project for a weekend day.

Instructions

1. Cut four pieces of 2 by 4 lumber to a length of 26 inches. Nail four pieces of 2 by 4 inch lumber to the ceiling joists of the garage. Place them so they mark the corners of a square that is 48" by 48". The 2 by 4 boards should extend down 24 inches below the level of the joists.

2. Cut two pieces of 2 by4 inch board to a length of 48 inches. Nail the two pieces of 2 by 4 inch board across the bottom of the vertical boards so that they act as cross-members. The cross-members will be parallel to each other, at the front and back of the square.

3. Cut 4 pieces of 1 by 10 board lumber to a length of 48 inches. Slide these boards onto the cross-members and space them evenly There will be a bit of a gap between each. Nail them into place to complete the floor of your overhead garage storage unit.
