Ceiling Treatment Ideas

All too often, we forget to look up when planning a remodeling project. The ceiling is a wide open space that few consider as part of the design scheme of a room. However, especially in the case of the bedroom, we spend a lot of time looking at the ceiling and corners of this wide open space. Take time and thought to make this often whitewashed and forgotten surface the masterpiece of your room.

Pressed Tin Panels

The details of yesteryear have become highly prized in modern homes. Craftsmanship that used to be standard--the carved wooden door, the artfully wrought metal doorknob or latch, and the decorative and highly functional built-in hutch--are now custom order items. Installing pressed tin panels on your ceiling, however, is one way to bring the charm of craftsman beauty into your modern home. Pressed tin panels come in different designs, from squares with molded edges to fleur de lis pattern relief. Tin can be painted with an oil-based paint after installation. Decorative metal expert Glen Eldridge for "This Old House" reminds potential tin panel enthusiasts that the tin will act as a sound amplifier, so choose the room and floor coverings carefully when installing this ceiling treatment.

Ceiling Medallion

One quick and relatively inexpensive way to liven up your ceiling is to install a ceiling medallion around your light fixture or ceiling fan. Medallions boast scrolls, leaves and intricate curls that create a finished trim look similar to molding, only in the round. Originally made from cast plaster and very heavy, modern versions are made from polyurethane foam and are light enough for one person to install alone. The ring is glued and screwed onto the ceiling and can then be painted. You will add interest to your room by creating a focal point at the light source or fan.

Laminate Wood

If your room design can benefit from the sheen and luster of new wooden floors, why not use the same treatment on the ceiling? Tongue and groove planks can be installed above you as well as below for a glamorous and rich affect. Choose your type and color of laminate, and then install as you would a floor or opt for professional installation. The planks should run opposite your ceiling joists and must be allowed to acclimate to the room before you hang them. Professionals at HGTV.com advise a decorative molding around the perimeter of the ceiling to hide nails and screws.
